Recall, Affecting Many Vendors, of Pre-Cut Onions Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

Diced, slivered, and whole peeled red and yellow onions, and diced onion and celery mix packaged under the brand "Gill's Onions" are the subject of a voluntary recall as they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The recalled products were shipped directly from Gills Onions, LLC of Oxnard, CA, to retailers in Canada and the following states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah and Washington.

Gills Onions and the FDA have been conducting concurrent investigations into the possible cause of contamination that led to the company’s recall. In the course of these investigations, Listeria was found in the facility in which the recalled product was processed. As a precautionary measure, all products from this facility have been recalled. This facility has been out of service since July 17, pending the outcome of the investigation and mitigation efforts.

Gills Onions notified all customers who received the recalled product directly from the company and requested that they remove it from commerce. Direct customers were asked to notify their customers of this recall.

Subsequently, GH Foods CA, LLC, recalled various products containing yellow onions distributed to retail supermarkets. Sartori Inspirations, LLC, recalled a small number of Ciolo branded items made exclusively for Whole Foods Market. Cool Creations, LLC, of North Kansas City, Missouri, recalled specific packages of a variety of products containing onions. Whole Foods Market in the state of Florida initiated a voluntary recall of certain fresh food items sold in the prepared foods departments, as well as one item sold in the seafood departments of their seventeen Florida stores. Publix Super Markets recalled custom sub sandwiches that contain onions. All of these recalled products were manufactured using onions recalled by Gills Onions.
