FDA Asks Manufacturer to Withdraw Weight-Loss Drug Meridia from the Market

The FDA asked the manufacturer of the weight-loss drug Meridia (sibutramine) to withdraw it from the market because clinical trial data indicated an increased risk of cardiovascular adverse events, including heart attack and stroke. The drug manufacturer agreed to voluntarily stop marketing Meridia in the United States, and will ask pharmacies and other retail establishments where Meridia is sold to return the product to the company. The FDA advised that patients who are currently taking Meridia should stop taking this medication and talk to their healthcare providers about alternative weight-loss measures. See the FDA drug safety annoucement.
